50 Years of Art & Energy: Inside MoMA PS1’s Epic Anniversary Block Party

MoMA PS1 50th Anniversary Block Party 2026

Half a century of boundary-pushing contemporary art. One epic free party in Queens. On Saturday, April 18, 2026, MoMA PS1 — one of the most important contemporary art institutions in the world — throws its doors open and invites the public to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a massive Block Party running from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The Legacy of MoMA PS1

Founded in 1976 as P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in a converted public school building in Long Island City, MoMA PS1 has long been the scrappier, more experimental sibling of the Museum of Modern Art. It was one of the first institutions dedicated exclusively to contemporary art in the United States, and it became a legendary incubator for emerging and avant-garde artists who couldn’t yet find a home in more traditional galleries.

Since its merger with MoMA in 2000, PS1 has continued to serve as a vital space for cutting-edge creative work — from immersive installations to live performances to politically charged exhibitions. Fifty years on, it remains one of the most creatively daring art spaces in the world.

What’s Happening at the Block Party

Artists & Performers

The April 18 Block Party features a curated lineup of artists and musicians coming together across PS1’s plaza, courtyard, and galleries. Expect live music sets, performance art pieces, DJ sets, and spontaneous creative happenings throughout the day. The specific lineup is expected to reflect the diversity and experimentalism that has defined PS1’s five decades.

Special Workshops

Two highlighted programs require advance RSVPs: a Mural Workshop with Lady Pink — one of the pioneering women of New York graffiti and street art — and Red Canary Song Presents Fly in Power, a performance rooted in community advocacy and Asian-American experience. Both are free with RSVP.

Gallery Access

During the Block Party, PS1’s current exhibitions will be open to visitors. The galleries offer a constantly rotating program of ambitious, often provocative contemporary art. Many visitors find the juxtaposition of outdoor celebrations and indoor art a perfect way to spend the day — bouncing between live music in the courtyard and quiet reflection inside the galleries.

Getting There

MoMA PS1 is located at 22-25 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, Queens. It’s easily accessible via the E, M, or 7 subway trains to Court Square, just a short walk from the museum. The event is free, though some of the special workshops require RSVPs through the PS1 website.

Why This Milestone Matters

In a cultural moment where arts funding is frequently under threat and experimental spaces struggle to survive, PS1’s 50 years represent something remarkable: an institution that has remained defiantly uncommercial, community-rooted, and artist-centered across half a century. This Block Party is as much a celebration of an idea — that art belongs to everyone — as it is a birthday party.
