Preakness Stakes 2026
The second jewel of the Triple Crown is almost here — and 2026 edition of the Preakness Stakes brings with it a historic first. Here’s everything you need to mark your calendar and tune in.
The Historic Venue Change: Why Laurel Park?
For 150 consecutive years, the Preakness Stakes called Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore home. In 2026, that changes. Pimlico is undergoing a massive $400 million renovation, forcing the race to temporarily relocate to Laurel Park in Laurel, Maryland — located about 20 miles south of Baltimore. This is the first time in the Preakness’s 151-year history that it will not be held at Pimlico.
The move has attracted significant attention. Industry analysts have praised Laurel Park’s modern infrastructure and improved facilities, while traditionalists have expressed nostalgia for Pimlico’s storied grounds. Either way, the race is expected to return to a fully renovated Pimlico in subsequent years.
🏇 HISTORIC SHIFT: The 151st Preakness Stakes will be held at Laurel Park on May 16, 2026. First time in race history away from Pimlico. #Preakness2026
